Sonat Özcivanoğlu is a mixed-technique artist, designer, architect, researcher (Ph.D. Candidate), and educator (Research Assistant at the Department of Architecture, TEDU). Received her B.Arch (2011-15) and M.Arch (2015-19) in Architecture from Middle East Technical University (METU), Faculty of Architecture. Currently continues her Ph.D. in Architecture at METU and works as a research assistant at TEDU. Her major academic research interests include walking-based mapping practices, architectural theory&criticism, narrative theory, and literary theory.
Her painting practice involves acrylic-gouache-pastel, linoleum-cut and wood-cut print, collage-making, embroidery+punch on fabric, and clay sculpting. She frequently incorporates various mediums and techniques to create a multi-layered composition, emphasizing thick paint, glued or taped pieces, and cut-outs.  Her work often incorporates found materials and everyday objects such as cardboard from packages, tickets, leaflets, newspapers, coasters, and bottles. You might have come across some of her drawings in the streets and pubs, as she relishes the opportunity to exhibit her works in unconventional settings. Although she did not graduate from a formal fine arts institution, she has had the privilege of studying with painters in their ateliers. Sonat's works have been recognized through various exhibitions and workshops.
Photo-works can be described as haunting and uncanny with a focus on capturing the eerie and unsettling aspects of everyday life. She often utilizes black-and-white photography. Recent projects incorporate scaled figures with daily objects, which are often rendered in an unsettling manner.
